Julian law allowed a woman to be exempt from marriage for one year after the death of her husband, for six months after a divor. The papia-poppaean law allowed two years after a husband"s death and eighteen months after a divorce. (39) Augustus place heavier penalties on unmarried men and on women without husbands. Augustus offered rewards for marriage and for having children.
