04:192:300 Study Guide - Prosocial Behavior, Systematic Review
Document Summary
In this literature review i will discuss how physical exercise is used to improve mental health. Mcauley et al. (2005) found that higher levels of self-efficacy and physical activity were significantly related to higher levels of self-esteem relative to physical condition, attractive body, and strength. In the same manner, bahaeloo-horeh et al. argue that participation in physical activity, specifically sports that focus on self-based activity, like mountaineering, are beneficial to students" self-esteem. Similarly, crone et al. describe physical activity as remarkably effective in promoting self-acceptance and addressing several aspects of mental health. Such aspects are mentioned by sagatun et al. (2007) that believe the amount one exercises can predict future mental health claiming the number of hours exercised per week is negatively associated with future emotional and peer problems. Bahaeloo-horeh et al. (2008) showed that participation in a mountaineering program improved students" self-esteem.
