Goals of criminal justice system- doing justice, controlling crime, and preventing crime. Subsystems of cjs- two justice systems- federal + state. Federal- fbi, drug trafficking laws, gun control, technology crime, terrorism, department of homeland security. Us marshals- courthouse security, move federal prisoners, protect witnesses, pursue fugitives. State- patrol highways, provide service in rural areas, conduct statewide drug investigations, provide services at state facilities. County agencies- sheriffs elected, lack power of cities and towns, Goals- keeping the peace, apprehending violators and combating crime, preveniting crime, providing social services. Courts- dual court system- national system and system for each state. Corrections- a lot of agencies and programs- public, private, community, and closed. Bottom layer misdemeanors, third layer lesser felonies, second layer serious felonies, and top layer "celebrated" cases. Crime control model emphasizes speed, efficiency, and accountability of offenders. Due process model emphasizes rights, formal procedures, and adversarial process. Goal is to base decisions off of reliable information.
