The issue of juvenile homicide has been broadly reported in the news in the united. It is difficult to assess the exact number of murders committed by juveniles because the age of the killer is not specified by the arresting authority in as many as a third of the cases. Many researchers have examined cases of youths killing over the past 50 years. Much of the difficulty with the available literature stems from the fact that most published accounts of young killers consist of case studies. The cases were often drawn from psychiatric populations, whose conclusions cannot provide us with the precise explanations why youth kill. These samples fail to reveal to what extent the youths examined are typical of the population of juvenile murders. Research on juvenile murders has been primarily deceptive. Statements about juvenile murders in the professional literature are typically about male adolescents who kill.
