Agency representation - the type of representation in which a representative is held accountable to a constituency if he or she fails to represent that constituency properly. Sociological representation - a type of representation in which representatives have the same racial, gender, ethnic, religious, or educational backgrounds as their constituents. It is based on the principle that if two individuals are similar in background, character, interests, and perspectives, then one could correctly represent the other"s views. They both play a role in the relationship between members of congress and their constituencies. Incumbency - holding a political office for which one is running. It plays a very important role in the america electoral system and in the kind of representation citizens get in washington. Once in office, members of congress posses an array of tools that they can use to stack the deck in favor of their reelection. It can also help scare off potential challengers.
