Zygote: one cell organism formed by the union of sperm and egg. Prenatal period: extends from conception to birth, usually encompassing nine months of pregnancy. Growth is faster during the period than any other period in human life. The germinal stage (2 weeks), zygote moves to uterine wall. Certain maternal illnesses can affect the baby, as well as malnutrition. Cephalocaudal: head-to-foot direction of motor development (children gain control over the top part of their body before the bottom) Proximodistal: center-outward direction of motor development (children move using their torso before their extremities)
