Psych of language midterm review fall 2017. Linguistics is about the structure of language. Psycholinguistics is about communication, comprehension, production or acquisition of language more general concepts. Linguistic competence is what you can do in an ideal situation. Linguistic performance is what you actually do in a situation. Generally, it is hard to study competence without some base measurement of performance. How you actually speak (what is produced) What you should say or do more formal. Meaning of a word and knowing which meanings are not likely in context. Knowing which words to use when (situational appropriateness) What forms of a word are acceptable: tenses past tense restrictions (seated*/sat, plurals exceptions to rule (houses versus *mouses, comparatives exceptions to rule (prettier versus *beautifuler) Generalizing grammatical forms to new words: see wug test (knowing to apply -s suffix to denote plurality)
