Romantic love was nice if it happened but not expected. Union: a stable intimate relationship between two people who live in the same household but may or may not be married. Parental influence was more direct in societies historically. Example: in rural villages through out the developing world, parents who have land or wealth pass it along to their children are more likely to have a voice in their marriages. When children become more independent by getting their own job and do not rely on their parents money, the authority of parents erodes regarding having a voice within a marriage. Example: in east asia, strong parental influence has become eroded over a generation or two, because children become more independent.
