Law: a concise verbal or mathematical statement of a reliable relationship between phenomena. Experiments are then conducted to test the hypothesis. If a hypothesis is not support, a new hypothesis may be generated. Then, this new hypothesis will be tested through experiments again. If a hypothesis withstands the test of extensive experimentation, it may become a theory. Theory: a unifying principle that explains a body of experimental observations and the laws that are based on them. Matter is either a substance or a mixture. Substances can be broken down into elements or compound. Substance: matter with a definite (constant) composition and distinct properties. Can be identified by appearance, smell, taste, and other properties. Element: a substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means.
