NSCI 3087 Study Guide - Final Guide: Simple Random Sample, Null Hypothesis, Statistical Inference
Document Summary
Primary motivation of experimentation is to disprove or fail to disprove a hypothesis. What makes a theory scientific is falsifiability or testability. You can"t just look for what confirms your data and this is why a hypothesis is a claim or prediction that has the potential of being wrong. The scientific method consists of formalized steps where by a theory is formed, tested and revised. Course of inquiry following a set of rules consisting of certain attitudes, goals, & procedures for creating and answering questions about nature. Inferential statistics - allow us to infer certain things about a simple random sample from a population; random means everyone in population (set of all individuals that can be measured) had the same chance of being selected. Statistical hypothesis testing deals with behavior of observable random variables. Its purpose is to determine if there is enough statistical evidence in favor of a certain hypothesis. It involves making a null and alternative hypothesis.
