Chapter 4
Cognitive level of prejudice: encompasses a person’s beliefs and perceptions of a group as
threatening or nonthreatening, inferior or equal (e.g., in terms of intellect, status, or biological
composition), seclusive or intrusive, impulse-gratifying, acquisitive, or possessing other positive
or negative characteristics in an individual
Example: Cognitive belief - Irish are hard drinkers

Emotional level of prejudice: encompasses the feelings that a minority group arouses in an
individual, these feelings represent a more intense stage of personal involvement
Example:whites might react angrily towards blacks integrating into the school system
Action-orientation level of prejudice: the positive or negative predisposition to engage in
discriminatory behavior. A person who harbors strong feelings about members of a certain racial
or ethnic group may have a tendency to act for or against that group - being aggressive or
nonaggressive, offering assistance or withholding it.
Example: some people would want to exclude members of the disliked group from doing
business with them or living in the same neighborhood
Self-justification: involves denigrating a person or group to justify maltreatment of that person
or group. Self-justification leads to prejudice and discrimination against members of another
group
Example: “they asked for it”/ if we can convince ourselves that a group is inferior then we
may feel justified to mistreating, discriminating, enslaving or even killing members/ establishing
a hierarchy
Displaced aggression: directing hostility against a powerless group to compensate for
feelings of insecurity and fear
Example: Aggressive driving or road rage
Scapegoating: blaming others for something that is not their fault
Example: between 1882 and 1930 the cotton prices declined and the number of black
lynchings increased
Selective perception: absorb information that accords with their own beliefs and rationalize
away information that does not
Example:
Stereotype: an oversimplified generalization by which we attribute certain traits or
characteristics to a group without regard to individual differences
Example: Asians excel in math
Chapter 5
Ethnoviolence: violent attacks on members of the disliked group, encompassses a range of
actions - verbal harassment and threats, vandalism, graffiti, swastika painting, arson, cross
burning, physical assault, and murder - committed against people targeted solely because of
their race, religion, ethnic background, or sexual orientation
Example: cross burning, vandalism
Social discrimination: the creation of the “social distance” between groups. In close, primary
relationships, people tend to associate with others of similar ethnic background and
socioeconomic level; thus, dominant-group members usually exclude minority-group members
from close relations with them.
Example:
Institutional discrimination: the unequal treatment of subordinate groups inherent in the
ongoing operations of society’s institutions.
Example: banks rejecting a disproportionate number of minority home mortgage applicants.
Affirmative action: the government’s efforts to curb discrimination in employment (President
Kennedy’s Executive Order 10925 in 1961 was first to use the term affirmative action).
