Document Summary

Questionnaires vs. interviewing- questionnaires are cheaper, they can be longer, can ask more complex questions, and can ask more sensitive questions. Typically do not have a high response rate (tend to be lower than personal interviews) Personal interviews- allows greater control of the interviewing situation and it is more vulnerable to interview bias. In personal interviews you can probe where you cannot in mailed questionnaires. Interviewers are able to observe other respondent characteristics. Cost more money because of training interviewers, etc. Mailed questionnaires- should include a cover letter and a self addressed stamped envelope. Personal interviews- rapport is the building of trust and good communication with the respondent. Panel survey design- an example of this would be: a researcher selects a sample of college students at a university and interviews them before a new recreation center is built. The researcher interviews these same college students six months later and one final time in a year.
