Document Summary

Chapter 24 digestion: histology: layers and what they contain (glands, muscle, nerves, blood vessels, lymphatics, etc ) Mucosa: mucus membrane lining the tract containing an inner epithelium and an outer lamina propria. Epithelium: stratified squamous or simple columnar, very avascular, connects to basement membrane, contains enterendocrine cells that secrete hormones into blood stream and control gi function. Lamina propria: areolar tissue sitting under basement membrane, very vascular (blood vessels, nerves, smooth muscle (muscularis mucosae), lymphatic vessels) Muscularis mucosae contains circular (inner) and longitudinal (outer) layers sometimes contains an oblique layer. Submucosa: dense connective tissue around the muscularis mucosae that contains larger blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves (submucosal plexus) Muscularis externa: the two layers of smooth muscles (longitudinal and circular). It is controlled by myenteric plexus and pacesetter cells. Myenteric plexus: symp. and parasymp. nerves running btw two layers. Pacesetter cells: smooth muscle cells that spontaneously depolarize. Peritoneum is parietal layer of abdominal serous membrane.
