The true artistic hero of any period is capturing an interesting subject/situation to posterity that shows novel moments of their time. He now turns his focus to children. He saw children in a mark twain-light. Children have this natural purity and honesty before they reach the adult world. Critics saw in both homer and whitman (will be discussed later) that there was this crude independence for conventional forms.
