The area that i am proud to call home is montgomery county. Capital area geology adjacent to northern virginia and the district of columbia. There is a rich history of gold mines and other quarries found in my area. In fact, one of the cities in maryland called chevy chase was named after an old gold mining company. Chase land co. was owned by two wealthy men who mined silver and gold in the western united states (history of chevy chase, md. Washington d. c. in montgomery county owes many of their initial town developments to the minerals gold and silver. There are over 44 different minerals found in quarries in the capital region of. One quarry in particular, the hunting hill quarry owned by rockville. Crushed stone inc. , was first opened in 1995. The rocks that have accumulated there are thought to have been from the ordovician age, mostly consisting of the igneous rock dunite.
