How was physical activity critical to survival: humans evolved in a hostile environment. We didn"t always have superior command of our natural environment (our pre-human ancestors were part of the food chain and were subject to predators). Physical activity was critical to survival, including to hunt, to avoid predators, and to compete with others for sexual partners. What is the founder effect: that small group will reproduce to populate the new location. What is a population bottleneck, and what could cause it: environmental event (e. g. earthquake, fire, flood, disease, drought) causes a sharp reduction in size of a population. Survivors usually share a beneficial trait (e. g. immunity to a specific disease). The population then reproduces, with all members possessing that beneficial trait. The european bison is an example of this; all european bison living today descended from 12 individuals after an intense overhunting nearly lead them to extinction.
