Document Summary

Chapter 11: sexuality & gender: gender is the perception of being male or female. Psychological: sex: typically refers to sexual anatomy and sexual behavior. How can they contribute to stereotypes and sexism: gender roles: the set of expectations, defined by a particular society, that indicate what is appropriate behavior for men and women. Expectations about women and men differ significantly, and these beliefs may result in favoritism toward members of one of the sexes. Gender roles may also produce stereotyping, judgements about individual members of a group on the basis of their membership in that group. Stereotypes about gender roles are reflected in sexism, negative attitudes and behaviors toward a person that are based on that person"s gender. These stereotypes potentially keep inequalities between genders alive. In western society: men = competent, independent, objective. Women = warm, expressive, aware of others feelings. Competence valued more, so differences between men and women are biased in favor of men.
