Document Summary

A general rst order di erential equation takes the form y = f (x, y) (or equivalently, in di erential notation, dy = f (x, y)dx). When we ask for the general solution to such an equation, we mean the collection of all functions y that make the equation true. If an additional piece of data is provided, such as the value of the function at one point, then you can narrow the possibilities down to one speci c function, and such a scenario is called an initial value problem. If a speci c value for y, say y = y0, causes f (x, y0) to be dead 0, then the constant function y = y0 solves the di erential equation, and we call it an equilibrium solution. You should look for equilib- rium solutions before applying other techniques since they sometimes get lost in your algebra.
