Document Summary

Lab 1 goals & objectives: you can measure diversity by observing and recording the total amount of individuals per species to see species evenness (relative abundance). On top of this, you can record the amount of species you see (species richness): transect sampling is done when a scientist runs a line, a transect, through the habitat. Every organism within a certain distance from that line will be recorded. Quadrat sampling is when a habitat is divided into rectangles called quadrats. Quadrats are randomly selected, and the number and types of species that are found in each of those selected quadrats are recorded: sampling is needed because in general, you can"t sample everything. You would probably spend your whole life if you wanted to sample a whole large area: a rarefaction plot is made by plotting the number of organisms found and the number of species. Everytime more species are found, it continues to go up.
