The definition of interpersonal communication: can be defined as the exchange of symbols used, at least in part, in the joint pursuit of interpersonal goals . Search for meaning and adapt to what they learn. Communication exchanges can never be replicated exactly (constantly changing ie: heart to heart conversation). Types of interpersonal goals: self-presentation goals (identity management): working to communicate an image of who we are and how we want to be perceived, relational goals: develop, maintain, or neglect particular relationships. Instrumental goals: try to get others to do us a favor or provide some kind of resource. Disconfirming message conveys negative evaluation of your partner and relationship (indifference, imperviousness, disqualification: distinguish between individualism and collectivism. Chapter 3: facial expressions and gaze nonverbal cues that occur around the face to communicate, kinesics gestures, emblem (particular type of gesture ie: waving)
