PSC 154 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Zakat, Prosocial Behavior, Tzedakah
Document Summary
Too much self-centered thinking is the source of suffering. Compassion is a sense of concern that arises when we are confronted with another"s suffering and feel motivated to see that suffering relieved. If we try out being kind when we"re not feeling like it, in a short period of time the pall of self- regard lifts. We are wired to be caring of the other and when we go against that fundamental law of our being, whether we like it or not, it is going to have deleterious consequences for us. We"re born with the trait of being compassionate. We admire people who are compassionate and want to be like them over someone who acts like a dictator: why is the modern world suspicious of compassion? . We have accepted the belief that nature is red in tooth and claw and that we are fundamentally competing against everyone and everything.
