Document Summary
If the conditions of a variable are not symmetrical, then neither are the levels. Likert scale-> continuous (numbers)/interval level scale nominal scale->categorical (words) When giving the operational definition-> say exactly how a variable is measured, where, and for what period of time. If a measure is valid, it must also be reliable. Experimental research"s 3 elements: 2 equal groups, 1 manipulated var. , measure outcome variable, goal: eliminate all other explanations. Actions-> observation (yes or no question) organized skepticism- Physical state-> monitor: procedural-anything about variable measured that would add error to the experiment. Convergent & discriminant validity-does it relates to other measures. External validity- results are universal to other situations/people b/c it"s what typically happens. *usually, internal is increased while external is decreased (inverse relationship) Translational research-uses lessons from basic research to test applications in health care, psychotherapy, etc. Basic research- goal to enhance the general body of knowledge, not to address a specific problem.
