These colonial powers had either the option of direct coercion or indirect means of accessing labor. The indirect methods include, but were not limited to, taxes and depriving people of their land. Since taxes needed to be paid in the currency of these sovereign powers, colonized peoples had no choice but to work for the sovereign people to earn the currency to pay those taxes. Another indirect method of securing the labor force was the process of taking away the peoples" land. People who are forced to live on small partitions of land so they can"t make ends meet and then are forced to work for the government anyways. For example, british colony took over 70% of kenya"s land and did nothing to it.
