Chapter 12: motivation and emotion: theories of motivation. Instinct theory behavior reflects innate action patterns triggered by environmental stimuli: drive reduction theory behavior reflects an attempt to maintain an internal equilibrium. What is a drive - action trying to go back to equilibrium. Homeostasis process involving physiological mechanisms that maintain an internal balance: deviations from this create a drive. Set point the value of a physiological variable (e. g. , wants to weight) that homeostatic processes seek to maintain; body maintain this: maslow"s theory physiological needs are satisfied (before psychological needs) Self-actualization the desire to realize oneself to the fullest; the highest motive. Incentive theory behavior reflects an attempt to achieve positive goals. Intrinsic motivation the incentive driving behavior is an integral part of the behavior itself. Extrinsic motivation the incentive is not integral to the behavior, but is artificially associated with it. Wanting the motivation to obtain a reward; measured by the effort expended to obtain it.
