The essay firstly highlights the importance and power of the audience’s ole of
interpretation in oral storytelling. Oral fairy tales have belong to the community due to the
strong bond between the storytellers and listeners. In addition, oral storytelling would be
modified to suit the time and audiences needs when going through the process of
transmission. Written fairy stories, on the other hand, tend to be more static in nature. Yet in
literacy tale, William Goldman still manages to use bunch of techniques to recreate many
active traditions of oral storytelling, forcing the readers to participant more actively.
One of the skills Goldman extensively uses is the mention of the history, geography, and
politics of a story to create communal validation. The blurring of fact and fiction somehow
assimilates and immerses the reader into Goldman’s fantastical story world, while drawing
attention to the necessity for the reader to interpret the events of the story
Another one of the techniques Goldman normally use is to establish an active and
relatable narrator to replicate the scenario of oral tales, provided with a prolonged
background. This persona would criticize the story alongside the audience and further
interact with readers. Because in oral storytelling, the diversity of the audience is also one of the
concerns in the storytelling process, Goldman constantly reminds the reader that the audience is
not one conglomerate mass of people.

Goldman further pushes the reader’s realization of the existence of his/her interpretation
by obscuring who the narrator actually is. Goldman escapes scrutiny from the reader as well as
responsibility, while maintain his credibility as a narrator in this way. The reader, in the end, is
left deciding what parts they are willing to accept and reject.
