Document Summary

Emergent properties: higher levels of organization result in new properties. Macromolecules: small organic molecules join together to form larger ones. Polymers: long molecules made up of many similar, repeating building blocks: (monomers) Like a train consists of a chain of cars. Monomers: the repeating units that serve as building blocks of a polymer. Some monomers have functions of their own. Enzymes: specialized macromolecules that speed up chemical reactions. Dehydration reaction: a reaction in which two molecules are covalently bonded to each other with the loss of a water molecule. When a bond forms between two monomers, each monomer contributes part of a water molecule that is released during the reaction: one provides a hydroxyl group(-oh, the other provides a hydrogen (-h) For every new bond one h2o is produced. Hydrolysis: a process that is essentially the reverse of the dehydration reaction. Ex: in our bodies, the process of digestion is like hydrolysis.
