This worksheet is designed to prepare you for the Midterm Exam. Work alone or with another
classmate and answer the following questions to the best of your ability. Use any support materials
you need. You may talk through answers. Use extra paper if needed. Be sure to put you name on
your work.
1) How might cell phone use be seen as a social cause of disease? Draw from lecture.
Cell phones are made of heavy metals. Such as Lead, Mercury, and cadmium. The average lifespan of a
cell phone is about three years. The global population owning a cell phone is about six billion. With that
being said at least every three years six billion of cell phones are being recycled by incineration. All the
heavy metals that are being melted and evaporated pollute the air and infiltrate our water system which in
return cause all type of cancers. According to research Bladder cancer is strictly associated with heavy
metal absorption.
2) From the Brown et al. reading, define the terms “intersectoral approaches” and “transportation racism”.
Why are these important when addressing asthma?
The term “intersectoral approach” means to tackle Asthma issues by not only using a medical approach,
but also an economic, political, social and educational approach. Because there are several factors that
trigger Asthma in the midst of a community. “Transportation racism” is the fact that old technology diesel
buses are disproportionately distributed into the community where minorities and low class people live.
And also about $12 billion dollar of Federal and State money are being spent on the “Big Dig” highway
project while the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority refused to spend $105 million to purchase newer,
cleaner buses and bus shelters.
3) From House et al. reading, what has been problematic about linking health to social
relationships? Your answer must discuss the difference between retrospective vs. prospective
approaches to research. Briefly discuss what we now know about social relationships and
disease.
The problematic about linking health to social relationships is that it is not clear to know if the
lack of social relationships cause people to become ill or die? Or are unhealthy people less
likely to establish and maintain social relationships? Or is there some other factor, such as a
misanthropic personality, which predisposes people both to have a lower quantity or quality of
social relationships and to become ill or die? Retrospective studies from death certificates or
hospital records ascertained the nature of people’s social relationships after they have become
ill or died and cross-sectional surveys of general populations determined whether people who
reported ill health also reported a lower quality or quantity of relationships. A Prospective
approach to research focuses on long-term studies of community which provide compelling
evidence that lack of social relationships constitutes a major risk factor for mortality.
4) In the article “Dying Alone: The Social Production of Urban Isolation” Eric Klinenberg
discusses four key social conditions that contributed to excessive deaths during the 1995
