Product of the rhetorical art: related field: rhetorical criticism: studies an act of inducement/persuasion. Study of rhetoric began in greece in the 5th century b/c people were democratic and thus could speak in public. Leadership role was played by rhetors who would make direction that was best for them or for the city. Sophists or paid teachers taught people how to be effective in public life by mashalling arguments, speeches into logical parts, careful choice of words. Lesser figures began to publish handbooks on art of speech . Socrates and plato distrusted such teachings and attacked rhetoric as essentially a form of flattery- morally irresponsible and not based on the knowledge of truth, rather a manipulation of opinion. Plato"s argument- rhetoric was an art of making the false appear true and the worse appear the better. He said if sophisticated rhetoric actually had an advantage over speech, it must be distorted in some way.
