In this article, the author eggert argues that korean religion is entangled with western religion, but is not necessarily an outcome of western expansion and influences. Chiwon, and yi pyonghon, eggert looks more deeply into the 18th-19th centuries, a time period when western religion began to impose its values on korean religion, in order to develop his point. He claims that chiwon holds the position of a relativist and is skeptical of the new. Western influences on korean religion, and his tolerance towards catholicism reaches its limits. Essentially, choe hangi was more conservative in his thoughts and sought to protect confucianism"s basic principles. My questions/criticism: my first argument or question. However, i feel that she could have used more examples of other scholars from the same periods to reinforce the ideas that were prominent at the time: my second argument or question.
