Universe: space and everything it contains, including earth. Cosmology: the systematic study of the overall structure and history of the universe. Matter: the substance that makes up objects. Energy: the inherent ability of a region of space and the matter within it to do work i. e. change itself and/or its surroundings. Mass: amount of matter in an object. Celestial objects: naturally occurring bodies in the universe. Only recently has cosmology been developed and applied to understand the universe. The 2 basic entities in the universe are mass and energy. Understanding cosmology provides a foundation for studying earth. The sun and the earth are examples of celestial bodies. Astronomer: a person who studies celestial bodies. Geocentric model: celestial model where a fixed earth is orbited by the sun, moon and planets within a shell of stars. Star: an immense sphere of incandescent gas that emits intense energy. Heliocentric model: celestial model where all planets, including earth, orbit the sun.
