Psyche: greek meaning relating to breath, soul, spirit, and mind. Ancient greeks spoke of this with plato and socrates. A group of scientist, called structuralists headed by titchener trained people to observe their own mental events. Problem: lacked objectivity- could not be observed by scientists. Behavior can be observed, knowledge about behavior can be validated. What we cover: experimental, social (how we act in groups), developmental (throughout life), industrial (in labor relations), behavioral neuroscience (how brain works), clinical (meetings with psychologist) Empirical: gained and validated from senses and environment. Science is an empirical form of knowledge: through experiments and observations. No observations needed to gain or prove knowledge. Not validated by experience or logical analysis. Goal of science: to formalize parsimonious laws. Formalize: to state a proposition in an unambiguous way. Law: a statement about relationships amongst events. Must be able to verify and falsify. Cannot be proven right, only proven wrong.
