Nature of abnormal behavior, theories and data regarding symptoms, etiology, treatment and prevention of mental disorders. 24% of u. s adults have a college degree. The scientific study of abnormal behavior to describe, predict, explain and change (change as in help or to come to acceptance) abnormal patterns of functioning. >workers in the field: clinical scientists, clinical practitioners. Deviance-from behaviors, thoughts and emotions from society"s ideas, norms. Deviance- usually has to cause distress before they can be labeled abnormal. Dysfunction- interferes with daily functioning (work, school, relationships) Culture plays a role in the definition of abnormality. Dysfunction alone doesn"t necessarily indicate psychological abnormality. Behavior may be consistently careless, hostile, confused. Being dangerous is the exception rather than the rule. Each society selects general criteria for defining abnormality. 3 essential features: sufferer, trained healer, series of contacts between healer and sufferer who produce change. Pill : empirically tested, large enough group, experimental group, control group, blind-study, double-blind study.
