Symbols: verbal and nonverbal messages; ex: thumbs up, words, tone, etc . Channels: methods of communication - face to face, skype, phone call, ft. Gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, sports team preference, etc. Small group communication: interactions and decision making in smaller group. A systematic, cognitive process, that has transactional qualities. Systematic, cognitive process: requires communication and the ability to encode and decode messages. Encoding: creating messages to send (e. g. over text, or thinking before speaking ftf) Decoding: translating the communication/symbols given to you into things you understand. Lol laugh out loud; understanding what words mean. Transactional qualities: a trade, we give each other stuff. Competent communication: effective and appropriate communication for a given situation; Interdependability and irreversibility where the communicators are aware of their processes of communication.
