Document Summary

Concept of book of polyphony, than a textbook illustrated with pictures . Did so in layers: staves notes texts. Made dodecatheon a/b/c , mostly chansons and motets. Most famous for frottole songbook, for amateurs and improvisation. Got patent so that others couldn"t make polyphonic books till 1520. Allowed to print whatever music for six years (monopoly) When copyright over, many musicians tried to partner with experienced printers to make money. Safer to reprint new editions than create new books altogether. Memlo made the printing less sloppy and more readable. Credibility from all contributors of the song book. Not sure who actually bought and used song books. Only patrons were specifically handed a copy by the publisher/composer. Wealthy people usually bought the books for libraries. Created for domestic enjoyment , as a painting. Need to be musically trained to read, either self taught or instructed. Copyright served to protect publishers and make money.
