Violence (dialogue) as self expression (disruption)
Violence facilitated by media- we are against these things. We are not you, we are us.
Violence against an individual
vs
Violence against the system
Violence of people hurting each other or someone expressing themselves/ disruption
Most ways of self expression is violent in the sense it is disrupting (?)
Othering- Binary. with the form of the media now a days, people are just receiving data and not
interpreting it and not questioning it. When you are not questioning it as much it becomes easier
to manipulate communities and people. Electronic media made it easier to manipulate mass
numbers of people.
Today
Surveillance: People setting up rules in favor of a biased system
People are still looking ad super pixelated/fragmented videos/images which adds on to cultural
biases. People think that computers can do no wrong, but they are completely misunderstood.
We trust these images because its real photographic evidence, but lets challenge that
People might not even see the actual image that is trying to be presented during a trial. Like
they show something but they’re not showing the whole thing
The way body cams are being marketed is that it’s a way of self protection. These are tools that
people are being selective with.
The Digital Image- In Numbers: in 2017, it is predicted that 1.3 trillion photos will be taken. As
soon as digital photos started being taken, analog photos started plummeting.
Selfies:
There has been 24 billion selfies recorded that was taken (lol never thought i would write that)
Selfies are a layered media- media that was born out of other media. Selfies are facilitated by
technology. Designers and developers started noticing that people were trying to take photos of
themselves with traditional digital cameras and always failing because they couldn't see what
they were doing, so they started putting a front facing camera on cell phones and tablets.
If instagram didn't exist, then there would probably be significantly less selfies taken. It is the
social aspect of the internet that made selfies become more popular.

Vivian Fu- UCSC graduate, photographer
“Selfies are a space for people to represent themselves, and from that, for us to understand
each other”
ArtHoeCollective- they wanted to create a space for people of color and to say that “this is who
i am” and to challenge people who made the stereotypes. They want to stay neutral in times of
injustice.
These two artists use selfies as a way to challenge people…
Facial Recognition:
Started to be introduced more to mass numbers of people through Snapchat.
Augmented bodies
Facial recognition not only is now being used as a way to unlock devices, but it is also a way to
buy things. Like you buy things with your face OMG
They want to get rid of using pin codes and passwords because they are easily hackable, so
they are proposing facial recognition and fingerprint scanning as a more secure way to lock your
devices.
When your face becomes data, who do we trust with that data? At some point someone is going
to find out how to hack these and then it becomes a big issue. Things like your thumbprint or
your face is not protected under the same circumstances as actual passwords and pin codes
(look up later bc your headass forgot)
As soon as you are having something like this be apart of mass media, there starts to become a
larger issue at hand.
Algorithmic bias is embedded into the code of facial recognition. Algorithmic bias can travel as
quickly as it takes to download a file off the internet. Algorithmic bias can also lead to racial
biased. 1 in 2 adults in the US has their face in facial recognition systems.
Who code matters
How we code matters
Why we code matters
Machine learning (look up later)- The end of Code. Instead of giving a computer a set of
directions, it is trying to train and teach them so that they can think of their own. Artificial
intelligence and machine awareness, basically. If you're not giving the machine enough ranges,
