Smith kline and french (glaxosk) tried to make synthetic ephedrine (later developed pseudo-ephedrine or sudafed), but made amphetamine, which worked better, instead. Stimulants: increase bp to shrink blood vessels and increase airways; ppa, ephedrine, sudafed, phenylephrine, epinephrine, and amphetamine all have very similar molecular structures: amphetamine widely used otc until 1965. Benzedrine (amphetamine) inhalers available otc until early 1950s.
