ANTH106 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Binge Drinking, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Congenital Disorder
Document Summary
Life history theory: all organisms experience physiological changes across the lifespan but timing and duration of these stages are highly variable and organisms faced with 2 major constraints and have 2 major tasks. Can be used to predict why teenage pregnancy in the us is so much higher for inner city blacks: growth, reproduction, time, energy. Several mammalian stages of life: gestation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, senescence. *various factors that influence how long these stages are and the associated risks. Have to decide how to allocate time and energy between growth and reproduction. If adult mortality is high, organism should grow quickly and reproduce early. If juvenile mortality is high, it"s better to have a lot of offspring to ensure some survive. If adult mortality is low, organism can grow longer before devoting energy to reproduction. If juvenile mortality is low, parents can afford to have fewer offspring. Birthweights around average have greatest chance of surviving.
