Document Summary

Observations, hypothesis, predictions, experiments (or new observations), theory. A guess made about the outcome using the hypothesis. Theory is a fact that has been tested. Energy can"t be created or destroyed only transferred (sunlight is input energy, into heat/work (output energy). The degree of disorder(entropy) increases(heat released increases disorder in environment. Every known living organism is made of either one cell or many cells. Living organsims: complex, change in response to environment, reproduce, evolve. Essential features of a cell: nucleic acid, dna, proteins. Dna transcribes into rna which is translated to protein. Lipids w/ hydropholic &hydrophobic regions spontaneously form structures such as bilayers in aqueous environments. Proteins that span the membrane are transmembrane proteins. Peripheral proteins are temporarily associated w/ one layer of the lipid bilayer. Parameters that need to be stably maintained inside of a cell: ph, salt & water concentration. Roles of proteins:transporters move ions&molecules across the membrane. Receptors allow the cells to receive signals from environment.
