Vertical and Horizontal Identities
• Vertical identities (shared experience)
o Definition - traits / identities that are transmitted from one generation to the next
• Ways you are the same?
o Can be through genes (DNA)
o Can be through "shared cultural norms"
• Examples of Vertical Identity:
o Skin, eye color
o Language
o Religion (sometimes!)
• Horizontal identities
o Definition - inherent or acquired identities / traits that are foreign to one's parents
o Acquired from peers, society at large, media, etc.
• Examples:
o Physical disabilities (sometimes)
o Genius
o Psychopathy
o Sexual orientation (gay vs. straight --> where does one learn "Gay culture")

• Looking at something as an illness vs. looking at something as an identity.
History: definition, prevalence, institutionalization
Disability Definition
• A disability is any condition of the body or mind (impairment) that makes it more difficult for the
person with condition to do certain activates (activity limitation) and interact with the world
around them (participation restrictions)
Disability has Three Dimensions
• Impairment - in a person's body structure of function or mental functioning
o Example: loss of a limb, loss on vision, or memory loss
• Activity limitation - difficulty seeing, hearing, walking, or problem solving
o DIRECT RELATIONSHIP WITH PARTICIPATION RESTRICTIONS
• Hearing - may limit social interaction ( socially restricted)
• Walking - may miss out on sports; in the work place
• Participation restrictions - in normal daily activities
o Working, engaging in social and recreational activities, and obtaining health care and
preventative services
• Example: healthcare and hearing -- may have trouble to talk to provider on phone (do
they have technology so that they can be reached)
Impairment
• Absence of or significant difference in a person's body structure of function or mental functioning
o Examples:
• Problems with structure of brain -- difficulty with mental functions
• Structure of eyes and ears -- difficulty with vision or hearing
• Structural impairments
o Nerve damage results in M.S.
• Functional impairments - complete or partial loss of function of body part
o Chronic pain from stuff / immobile joints
o Partial vision loss
o Complete hearing loss
