Defining civilization : comes from the latin word civitas meaning city , civilizations are commonly defined as having stable, unmoving cities. First cities: started to appear around 10,000 bce in egypt and mesopotamia. Prior to this, tribes of people were migratory. Egypt and mesopotamia are two of the first cultures to show developed ways of living. Jobs were distributed to those with specific skills instead of each person having to know a broad scope of skills to contribute to the group. The greeks strongly influenced european culture via their art: broad range of mediums. Most surviving greek paintings are on pottery. Wood paintings also existed, but many could not be preserved due to. Greece was not confined to the borders of a specific countries: collection of cities and city-states that all spoke some form of greek dialect. Traveled between cities to trade goods such as olive oil and wheat. Each city had its own patron god or goddess.
