Chapter 8: intelligence and individual difference in cognition. Psychometricians: psychologists who specialize in measuring psychological characteristics, such as intelligence and personality. Charles spearman- reported findings that a general factor for intelligence, or g, is responsible for performance on all mental tests. Thurstone and thurstone- analyzed performance on a wide range of tasks and identified seven distinct patterns, each reflecting a unique ability: perceptual speed, word comprehension, word fluency, space, number, memory, and induction. John carroll- proposed a hierarchical theory with three levels. Carroll"s hierarchical theory is a compromise between the two views of intelligence- general versus distinct abilities. Ho(cid:446)ard gardner- did not use test scores as the basis for his theory, instead drew from research in child development, studies of brain-damaged persons, Final exam review and studies of exceptionally talented people; his theory identifies nine different intelligences. Each intelligence identified is regulated by a different region of the brain.
