Suicide 9/6/16
Suicide- Overview
Explaining patterns in suicide
Producting suicides
The Bottom Line: Sociology requires thinking systematically about social relationships
(Clicker question): The Werther Effect explains that people commit suicides because
they are imitating other suicides
We tend to think of suicide as a psychological issue. They could be depressed or have
some type of mental disorder.
But, it is a social phenomenon. It can be considered honorable. If someone has
disgaed theseles, they ay kill theseles to deostate shae to sho they’e

kill themselves to regain honor for their conviction.
One way to qualify for the medal of honor is to sacrifice yourself (throwing body on

To divide human history into 2 periods: old days, modern times.
Prior to the industrial revolution, people lived in small villages, worked in agriculture,
growed crops to support ppl in village. It took 9 farmers to feed 10 people. But,
economies began to shift. There are new jobs making things (particularly machinery).
These people left countryside and began to congregate in cities.
Later, people began to realize that their lives are different from their parents and
grandparents lives.
So how do we understand this great monumental change in society? People who study
this are sociologists. People began to keep records of things. (statists) (statistics). Early
social scientists keeping large numbers of statistics were statists and the data and
numbers they kept were statistics.

Taking a nineteenth-century census
Many other countries started with the statistics too. In old days, census takers would
walk around and knock on doors and get information and write the info down. Lots of
records started to be kept.
Emile Durkheim (1858-1917)
A man who is interested in the question: How does a whole lot of people come
together, what holds them together, what makes them into a society?
Hes interested in what produces social solidarity.
Wrote a book called Suicide, one of earliest classics in sociology. He wants to show the
power in a new way of thinking. He takes something that seems completely individual
(suicide), and shows where the sociology is.
He goes to NY and gets reports from various beaurocrats, instead of just taking deaths,
he takes note of HOW the deaths occurred.
One of his reports for number of suicides in 1869: France: 5,114. Denmark: 488.
To calculate suicide rates, divide number of suicides by number of million people in the
area. His rates were: France: 135. Denmark: 277. This now makes sense of why the
numbers were so high, also because France is way bigger than Denmark.
Since WWII, the overall suicide rate in the US has:
Gone down.
The age group with the highest sucide rate:
Old people.
Which sex has the highest suicide rate?
Males (significantly higher).
Which race has the highest suicide rate?
White. By way higher
Social Integration/Social Solidarity
These things are the glue that holds society together.
Dukhei’s theoy says that if you hae ey lo o ey high soial solidaity, suiide
rate is higher.
The reason he looked at the Protestants suicide rate was because he looked at them
different from Catholics. He argues that traditionally, Catholicism in Europe was a
religion that emphasized social solidarity. The priest got up and talked in a language
nobody could understand, and was communicating to God and through him God
communicated back.
But, Protestantism is diffeet. They ae sayig Ho oe the piest gets to talk to god
