Document Summary

Chapter 7 - deviance, crime and social control. Refers to the techniques and strategies for preventing deviant human behavior in any society. In the family, we are socialized to obey our parents simply because they are our parents. Society uses this to encourage the acceptance of basic norms. Sanctions: penalties and rewards for conduct concerning a social norm. Conformity: going along with peers - individuals of our own status who have no special right to direct our behavior. Obedience is the compliance with higher authorities in a hierarchical structure. (ex. a recruit entering military service will typically conform to the habits and language of other recruits and obey the orders of superior officers. ) Milgram pointed out that in the modern industrial world, we are accustomed to submitting to impersonal authority figures whose status is indicated by a title (professor, lieutenant, doctor) or by a uniform (the technician"s coat).
