Service-learning is an educational approach that combines learning objectives with community service in order to provide a pragmatic, progressive learning experience while meeting societal needs. Volunteer work unconnected to academic work being done in class. The community work must inform the academic work and vice versa. Volunteer work determined by those in academia rather than by the community partner. The nature of the volunteer work should be determined by the community partner, not solely by the academic entity. Become more comfortable with diversity/those different than self. Better understanding of social issues: more competitive on job market. Jump start their careers, especially if goals involve research. Madan and teitge, 2013, benefits of undergraduate research, journal: the mentor. Interdisciplinary work is difficult to teach in the classroom, but it is the norm in research. Experience in this area is a major benefit for the workplace. Provides the opportunity to explore and clarify career goals.
