Be able to explain the difference between a personal troubles perspective and the sociological imagination. Problems that are thought to be the result of personal events in a person"s life. Personal troubles perspective relates to the what"s with them though process. Result of personal attributes or innate tendencies- places personal blame. Example: seeing a homeless man on the street and saying he must be an alcoholic broader social or public issues. Sociological imagination relates to understanding individual problems to being rooted in. Ability to see the connection between an individual"s biography as well as larger social forces. Also sees societal patterns that influence the individual as well as groups of individuals. Requires seeing an issue within its historical context. Example: when a lot of people are experiencing a certain thing then it"s most likely from the institutional level: know the main ideas and contributions of each sociological theorist. Studied social facts (aspects of society that shape individual action)
