All cultures go through same basic stages before reaching culture like the one. Ik: foragers in uganda; hunters/gathers; forced by govt to become sedentary farmers so that govt can use their land. Economic strategy is connected to kinship relation. Foraging: relies on food that"s naturally available in environment (didn"t have to grow own food); sort of blend of hunting/gathering. Mobility: animals move freely, plants grow freely, water moves freely. Foragers need to have flexible boundaries and be able to travel those bounds. Egalitarianism (social equality): eliminate status inequality, groups have general home range, resources in it are available/belong to everyone. Social distinctions based on age; not limited to foragers. Marks expectations, limit responsibility, constrain productivity, guide behavior. People work regardless of their age; elderly tend to crops, ritual specialists, uphold cultural traditions-- they remain active, productive and engaged despite age.
