Document Summary

Note: minor details subject to change, though any changes would be widely publicized! Note on video clips shown in lecture: you can find specific information on where to find relevant videos and which clips we focused on in the corresponding topic"s ctools folder. Ability to name the four fields of anthropology is often wise for these exams! Cultural anthropology- explores the cultural diversity of the present and the recent past. Biological anthropology- documents diversity involving fossils, genetics, growth and development, bodily responses, and nonhuman primates. Linguistic anthropology- discovers diversity among languages and how speech changes in social situations over time. Archaeological anthropology- reconstructs cultural patterns, often of prehistoric populations. All consider variation in time and space, and each examines adaptation. Terms to know from lecture and/or woh: ethnocentrism; familiarizing/ defamiliarizing; Thick descriptions ( very, very basic sense of that); universals vs. Ethnocentrism- tendency to view ones own culture as superior. Take an unfamiliar cultural practice and: thick- search for meaning.
