Document Summary

Names are comprised of five main parts in specified order and punctuation. In general, the principal name is derived from the longest strand of carbon atoms bearing the greatest number of simple substituents. The atoms of the principal chain are numbered from one of the two ends: specifically, in order to give the first structural feature encountered the lowest number. The structural features are ranked: numbering for a group suffix is more important than a chain suffix is more important than a prefix. There can only be one group suffix designated for a name (these group suffixes are ranked, and prefix alternatives must be used for any others). There is no ranking within prefix- designated groups, if no point of difference can be found for numbering, then alphabetical ranking is used. Replicated prefixes and suffixes are combined using di, tri, tetra, etc (do not count alphabetically).
