East asia is also a cultural sphere with a shared script (chinese characters), shared words, art (calligraphy, ink painting), fashion (silk), philosophy and religions, political structures and ideas, food and drink (tea, rice, chopsticks) Far east--term used that conveys twentieth century worldview centered on europe. For much of the twentieth century, americans referred to east asia as the far east even though it lies west or northwest from the us. Asia are remnants of this worldview, because it is defined by cultural difference from. Europe; it is not a separate continent in any geological sense. Pacific rim--the notion of the pacific rim was first introduced during the late 1980s and 1990s.
