78 views5 pages

Document Summary

Memorize functional groups they will occur many times in the book and an understanding of them is critical to understanding the functions of molecules, the structure of biomolecules, and the function of enzymes. Understand the differences between conformation and configuration, especially in isomers; what are chiral molecules etc. Be able to list and describe the major categories of macromolecules, their subunits, and (later) the types of binds that join the subunits. Be able to list the parent compounds for each group. Understand hydrogen bonds, know which functional groups can make h-bonds. Understand why polar substances are soluble in aqueous solutions and non polar are not (what is the difference between polar and nonpolar molecules) Understand, from a biochemical perspective, what actually happens when a salt crystal, glucose, and amphiphilic substances are dissolved in water. Be able to list and describe all 4 types of weak interactions (how strong are they compared to covalent bonds and compared to each other).
